Downtown Tuscaloosa | Tuscaloosa, AL

Downtown

When University of Alabama students aren't studying hard, going into town is one of their favorite pastimes. The heart of T-Town resides between Bryant-Denny Stadium and Lurleen B Wallace Boulevard, bordered to the north by the Black Warrior River and to the south by Paul W Bryant Drive. The whole of downtown Tuscaloosa encompasses three distinct areas: The Strip, midtown, and downtown proper. Whether you're looking for downtown Tuscaloosa apartments or something to do, these three sections of the downtown are worth getting to know. Each portion contributes something unique to Bama's culture and offers plenty to explore when you have the time!

The Strip

Immediately adjacent to Bama's campus is The Strip, the hotspot for Tuscaloosa nightlife. Unique bars line the east end of University Boulevard, drawing students to this part of the downtown throughout the week. Some of the most popular restaurants in town call The Strip home as well. Quite a few of them accept dining dollars, meaning that Bama students can grab a meal at favorites like Swen or Mediterranean Sandwich Co. without dipping into their bank account. Both lively and close to campus, The Strip is the premier location for a great meal and a night out.

Midtown

Approaching the courthouse on University Boulevard, The Strip blends into apartments near Midtown and eventually the downtown proper of Tuscaloosa. While the borders aren't well defined, midtown provides a bridge to the west end of the whole downtown. In this central stretch of University, restaurants and coffee shops are what you'll mostly find. It's also the home of JNJ Apparel, the local go-to for repping local businesses and big gameday wins on shirts, sweats, hats, and more. While there are several downtown Tuscaloosa apartments in this part of town, choices tend to be more limited than in areas nearer to campus and The Strip.

Downtown proper

Though the dividing line isn't clear, the downtown proper of Tuscaloosa is very distinct. Whereas other parts appear much more geared towards students and everyday outings, downtown proper gives an upscale impression. Brick sidewalks and boutiques define the experience of the west end of town. Shopping destinations like Pants Store and The Shirt Shop are some of the most popular clothiers for gameday and other events. Restaurants like Half Shell Oyster House and DePalma's serve as hosts for anniversaries, graduations, and more. When it's a special occasion, downtown proper is usually the venue.

Apartments in downtown Tuscaloosa

Though "downtown" covers a lot of ground in the Druid City, much of the off-campus housing is limited to areas closer to the university. Student apartments in downtown Tuscaloosa are clustered around The Strip, with more going up every year. That being said, these communities are in a prime location for getting the full Bama experience. Close proximity to the heart of Tuscaloosa's nightlife and campus means that nights out, gameday, and class are all a short trip from home. In addition, these newer complexes come with luxurious modern amenities like rooftop pools to complement standard ones like parking garages and gyms. If shorter walks and modern accommodations get your attention, you may want to call a downtown Tuscaloosa apartment home.

Downtown Tuscaloosa refers to a variety of places. The three different regions defining the city's downtown each have distinct features and attractions. Whether you're hitting the bars with friends, grabbing brunch, or looking for UA off-campus housing, you'll find what you're looking for in at least one of those subsections.
