After a long week of lectures, exams, and papers, students are always on the lookout for fun things to do around town outside of their off-campus housing. There’s no shortage of things to do in Tuscaloosa, but some things might suit you more than others. From events hosted by The University of Alabama to unparalleled nightlife, there really is something for everyone. One of the most important aspects of college life is working hard, but it’s just as important to play hard!
University of Alabama athletics
More than just an academic institution, UA is an athletic powerhouse. It’s hard to find a day of the week where there isn’t a soccer match, basketball game, or rowing regatta taking place. If sports are your thing, then you’ll have more than a few Division I teams to support. Intramural leagues are also available for you to join through University Recreation if you want to get in the game! All this is to say nothing of the football games and related events that dominate Saturdays in the fall. Gameday isn’t a thing to go to September through November, it’s the thing.
Nightlife
Another hallmark of Tuscaloosa is what takes place after dark. As the sun goes down and the streets light up, the town’s lively nighttime scene gets going. Many of the bars on The Strip have specials and events depending on what day of the week it is. Wine Wednesday at Gallettes and Houndstooth bingo are favorites of the of-age crowd, and 21st birthdays are often marked with an outing to either of these. Many other venues bring something unique to the table, like the mechanical bull of Rhythm and Brews or live music at Rounders. Not really at home in bars? Check out classics like bowling at Bowlero or something a bit bolder like Civil Axe Throwing, both of which are open well into the evening. If you’re planning a night out, explore your options and see which locations fit your vibe!
Shopping
A list of students’ favorite activities around town wouldn’t be complete without some of the hottest places to shop. Downtown Tuscaloosa boutiques like Pants Store and The Shirt Shop are staples for finding classy gameday apparel, and Plato’s Closet in Midtown Village is known for having special sales on desirable clothing items throughout the year. If you love reading, Ernest & Hadley Booksellers is a fantastic place to stock up on books before going to any of the numerous coffee shops scattered around town. For a unique shopping experience, head down to the River Market on Saturday mornings to see what local farmers and artisans are carrying.
Outdoor experiences
For those that love to be outside, there’s no shortage of activities in nature around town. Lake Nicol, a 15-minute drive from campus, is the perfect place to hike and swim when the weather is warm. There are countless trails in Tuscaloosa as well, and maybe you want a four-legged companion while you’re out exploring them. Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter allows students to take dogs out for the afternoon with its Happy Hour program. If you’re interested in longer trips that involve outdoor activities, University Recreation has all-inclusive excursions for anyone interested in caving, climbing, canoeing, and more!
Contrary to popular belief, life at Bama is more than just football and bars. Both have their time and place though. When students want to take it easy for a bit, there are all kinds of things they enjoy doing, some of them right by their UA apartment. From cozying up at home with a new book to rock climbing with some new friends, there’s something for everyone around Tuscaloosa.
