When students start college, many realize very quickly that they spend more money than they needed to at home. Groceries, organization dues, bills, and other things all add up very quickly, and this can be overwhelming. To combat this, many students begin looking for jobs on and near campus. There are plenty of options for students who wish to work close to campus, within walking distance of their UA off-campus housing, in between and beyond.
Restaurants
One option for work is at restaurants in Tuscaloosa. There are plenty within reasonable distance of every UA apartment, and the service, staff and management have good reviews. Working at a restaurant is a good choice for students with early classes, as many restaurants in Tuscaloosa are most busy at night. This will allow you to complete schoolwork during the day and work in the evening. Restaurants near apartments close to the Strip are also a good option when considering payment and benefits. Employees receive tips and often are allotted a meal, drink, or both during their shift, which can be a great benefit for students working late or working to pay for groceries.
Local Bars
Local bars are another great option for students. Similar to restaurants, bar employees have access to benefits such as snacks, shift drinks, and waived cover and payment on their nights off. Many students look to work at bars because of the sense of community it provides, as employees tend to become close friends with each other and with the employees of other bars nearby. Bartenders are required to be 21 years old to serve drinks, but other positions such as bouncers and waitresses are also available.
UA Organizations
The University of Alabama has many buildings, organizations, and activities that need to be run. Many students choose to work as a UA staff member in some capacity because of flexibility. Students who also work student jobs are afforded the understanding that they are taking classes and prioritize academics. Options include becoming a room advisor, working front desk shifts at the dorms, and working for UA Study Abroad, among many others. These are great options for students who have a tight schedule and would prefer to stay on campus.
Other Options
Near campus, there are several other options for job opportunities. Businesses such as Hotworx and Publix on the Strip are great options for students who are not looking to work at a restaurant but would like to remain within walking distance of campus. For students who are more flexible with transportation, Midtown Village and University Mall in Tuscaloosa host many different stores and shops that students enjoy working at. Students who choose to work on campus become very successful, as they learn time management skills with work, school, and social life balance and responsibility in getting and maintaining a job.
