When going to college, making friends can be the most daunting yet exciting prospects to look forward to. Going to college is a chance to start fresh, meet new kinds of people, and gain new perspectives through the experiences and backgrounds of others. The University of Alabama is a melting pot of people from all over the world, with most students attending from out of state, and a large group of international students as well. With such a large and diverse student population, it can be overwhelming to figure out where to start with meeting new people outside of your UA off-campus housing.

Although making friends can be daunting, there are plenty of ways for all types of students to get out there and meet new people. Here are a few great places to start.

Creative

For creative students that enjoy artistic activities like writing, photography, or graphic design, try out these organizations on campus.

The Crimson White: UA’s premier magazine written for students and by students. The Crimson White offers positions for writing, design, and photography for students that are looking to participate in distributing hot news on campus.

Alice Magazine: Founded by women and run by an inclusive student staff. Alice covers a wide range of topics from the latest skincare trends to the philanthropy behind female celebrities, to the latest fashion trends in Tuscaloosa. Alice offers positions for photography, graphic design, and creative writing in multiple areas.

Office of Student Media: The Office of Student Media on campus holds a variety of student-run production media. Check out the options they offer to find the organization that best suits you.

Intramural Sports

The University Recreation Center offers a variety of intramural sports for students looking to get active and meet new people. Sports such as volleyball, cross country, basketball, soccer, e-sports, dodgeball, and softball are all available for students to sign up and play to have casual fun and make new friends.sun

Clubs

Joining clubs on campus can be a great way to meet new people with similar interests to you. Attending such a large school can be beneficial to you because there are endless clubs and organizations to be a part of. Honor societies and programs specific to your major can be a great start for social and professional networking.

One great place to start is the SOURCE. The SOURCE is a website that offers links and descriptions to apply and join a variety of clubs and campus organizations and has the resources all in one place to make it easy and convenient for you to choose the best clubs to join.

Greek life

Many students choose to participate in Greek life at UA. apartments near fraternity row and Tuscaloosa apartments near sorority row are very popular for events and activities, and the members of each become close friends with the other members. Even by solely participating in the recruitment process will introduce you to so many new people, and they often end up becoming fast and close friends. Academic Greek life that unites students on similar career paths is also on campus, and students join these fraternities to meet people and create a professional network to help them establish success for the future.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that there are always people posting flyers for events or simply just to hang out at their apartments near UA, and there is nothing wrong with going new places with new people, because you just might meet your future best friends!
