Sorority recruitment at The University of Alabama—also known as "rush"—is a defining experience for many incoming women at the Capstone. Whether you've been looking forward to it for months or are just curious about the process, recruitment week is unlike anything else on UA campus. With a full schedule, hot weather, and lots of emotions, it's important to be prepared, both physically and mentally. Here's what you can expect and how to make the most of one of the most talked-about weeks in Tuscaloosa
Scheduling
Recruitment typically takes place the week before classes begin in the fall, giving potential new members (PNMs) a chance to focus on the experience without academic distractions. The week is broken down into several rounds:
- Open House
- Philanthropy
- Sisterhood
- Preference
- Bid Day
Each round narrows down your options as you meet members from each house and learn more about their values and sisterhood. Be prepared for early mornings, long afternoons, and lots of walking. The days can be draining, so bring snacks, a water bottle, and comfortable shoes—even if you switch to dressier ones before entering each house.
Tip: Keep an eye on the weather. Alabama heat and humidity are no joke in August, and storms can roll in unexpectedly. A small umbrella or rain poncho can be a lifesaver.
Activities
While your days will mostly be filled with conversations at different sorority houses, there's also a strong community atmosphere among PNMs. You'll be grouped with other students and assigned a Rho Chi (recruitment counselor), who will help guide you through the process and offer support. These women are there to answer your questions and help you feel comfortable, so lean on them when needed.
What to Wear
Outfits are a big part of recruitment culture at UA, and each round has its own dress code:
- Open House: Whatever you are most comfortable in! You will be walking in a pair of sneakers and a cute casual outfit. You will also be inside a bit so pack a jacket or cardigan (it can get chilly indoors).
- Philanthropy: UA usually provides a T-shirt; pair it with a cute skirt or shorts and comfortable shoes.
- Sisterhood: Think more casual dresses with heels or sandals
- Preference Night: A more formal look—cocktail dresses or something you'd wear to a wedding.
- Bid Day: Comfort is key! You'll be running (literally) to your new home, so sneakers and a cute, casual outfit work best.
Whatever you wear, make sure it feels like you. Confidence is the best accessory, and sororities are looking for authenticity above all.
The Big Day: Bid Day
After an emotional Preference Round, Bid Day arrives with excitement, nerves, and energy. You'll meet with your Rho Chi group to receive your bid card, and then it's time to run—yes, run—to your new sorority house. Expect signs, cheering, music, and lots of photos. It's a once-in-a-lifetime moment of joy and celebration.
After the festivities, most sororities host a lunch or casual event to welcome their new members. It's a great chance to meet your new sisters and start forming bonds that can last a lifetime.
What's Next?
After recruitment ends, you'll jump straight into the new member process. This is where you'll learn more about your sorority's values, participate in events, and start building connections with your member class. Recruitment can be overwhelming, but it's just the beginning of your journey. Whether you end up in your dream house or discover a new path, you'll come out of the week with new friends, memories, and a place in the Bama community!
