How Can I Keep My Parents Updated While I am Away at School?

Students moving away from school to apartments near bustling areas like the Strip often become overwhelmed quickly by the social and academic time requirements involved in being a college student. With that, it is easy to become caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, and social responsibilities involving parents can quickly go on the back burner. Our parents are very invested in our lives as we become independent individuals living on our own, and they likely want to hear from you and to remain updated throughout your college career. If you are the type of person who can forget social relationships when they are not in-person, here are a few tips to keep your parents in the loop.

Facebook Groups

For many parents, especially those of incoming and current freshman, joining UA parent groups on Facebook can be a great way for them to remain informed about the events, activities, and mundane daily updates at the University of Alabama. There are several different parent groups available on Facebook, including for the potential new members of sororities and fraternities, incoming freshman, international students, graduating students, and individual majors or colleges within the university. Making your parents aware of these groups is an easy way to ensure that they are receiving virtually live updates from other parents or students. Many parents enjoy this feature, as it makes them feel closer to their students and other parents who are also missing their children.

University Organizations on Instagram

Many students choose to join clubs and organizations on campus. A majority of these organizations have Instagram accounts where photos, videos, and features are posted on a daily or weekly basis. This can be a great way for your parents to stay connected not only to you, but to your accomplishments as a college student. Providing your parents with these accounts will allow them to follow along with the organizations you are part of, and the events, activities, and awards that occur throughout the school year.

Phone Calls

One of the seemingly obvious but easily forgettable things that you should be doing is to call home every once in a while. This can be difficult when you are not seeing your family every day, but a phone call or video call home is a great way to show your parents that you are thinking of them while away at school. Set reminders and alarms on your calendar that align with your schedule, so you can dedicate time from your dorm or UA apartment to sit down and have a focused and engaging conversation with them.

Remembering to stay in touch with your family is a very important aspect of your college career. Your parents know that you care for them, but especially after being around for you're the first 18 years of your life, it is important to show them you care by keeping them updated on your daily life as a college student away from home.
